Fame's Feathery Crowbar

A Warholian moment (Diebold take 2)

The late Richard Brautigan once wrote "It's really something to have fame put its feathery crowbar under your rock and then upward to the light release you, along with seven grubs and a sow bug." Two months after it was posted for the amusement of a few friends, the Diebold Variations page suddenly began to generate email traffic, not initially recognized for what it was (the spam rottweilers pounced and ravaged) about a week ago. I was initially mystified, but kind correspondents have since pointed me to links posted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation and by Arianna Huffington (!) on the Democracy for America site (successor, apparently, to the successor to the old "Dean for America" operation). Response to the ads has been generally positive, and I thank all who have written for their kind words. To those who have written with suggestions for additional ads...alas, I learned long ago that my muse is given to appearing unannounced and at erratic intervals, followed by longish spells in the Federal Witness Protection Program. In the case of the Diebold riffs, not quite 48 hours elapsed between the bulb going on overhead and its heroic filament flaring and falling dark. I may tinker with the page on which they're arrayed (it was a quick and dirty job, obviously), but the Variations themselves are likely to remain at just the existing eighteen. That's not to say any of you can't pick up the chad and run with it. If you do, you will find istockphoto.com an invaluable source for your images.
