633 Davis St., Luling, Texas ( railroad tracks and Hwy. 80) - 7am to 6pm, Monday thru Saturday
Located in downtown Luling, the Luling City Market is the classic old German meat market turned BBQ joint. They began selling smoked meat in 1930 to cotton pickers and oil field workers, served up on butcher paper. Things have not changed much since then, except that sides are now available at a separate counter.
You enter the market and go to the back room to order your meat. If you go at noon be prepared to stand in line, as it is a very popular place. The meat room is not for the smoke intolerant.
Order your meat by the pound except for the sausage which is sold by the link. They have brisket, pork ribs, and two types of sausage; a wet and a drier version. They do not serve chicken. Be sure and get your white bread and pickles.
No need to beware of a skinny cook here.
The holy trinity: Sausage, pork ribs, and sliced brisket.
The eating area is a large air conditioned space. The side counter is on the right. All appropriate dishes are available, including an excellent tomato based BBQ sauce. The required root beer is ice cold and a must for the meal.
The customers always leave happy and most definitely quite full!
