About The Book:
Descriptions of the thirty five most important quarries and mines of Oxford and Androscoggin Counties are covered in this book, where each has it's own chapter. The author describes in detail the basic history of each location, the minerals recovered historically and the major finds from each. Also discussed are the people who operated the quarries and some of their history.
Jane Perham is the daughter of Stanley and Hazel Perham of West Paris, Maine. Stan and Hazel operated Perham's of West Paris, a mineral and jewelry store in West Paris, for many years together. In fact, Stan started the business in his bedroom in 1915! The information Jane has compiled in this second edition comes not only from her own firsthand knowledge and experiences, but also includes invaluable and insightful information obtained from her parent's numerous field notes, as well as from the mining experiences of her brother, Frank C. Perham. Frank, a geologist, has studied and mined many of the locations in Oxford County, as did his father Stan.
Many of the major mineral and gemstone finds are discussed, particularly the major tourmaline finds from the Dunton Quarry and Mount Mica. As an eyewitness to some of these finds, you will enjoy Jane's firsthand report.
Also included in this book is a chapter describing some of the important people who made major contributions to the development of mineral resources in Oxford County, as well as a chapter on gold found in Maine. This book is full of historical information and photographs, and will provide you with many hours of enjoyable reading.
