| Tamminen Quarry Mineral List Greenwood, Oxford County, Maine (Open to the General Public, except during active mining.) Discovered by a feldspar mining operation in the 1930's, this quarry was a productive mine for many years. Feldspar was the main commercial product, but during its early year, pollucite was found here during the "pollucite craze" of the large electronic industries. Mr. Nestor Tamminen was the land owner at that time and actually found the first specimen at this quarry - a large smoky quartz crystal eroded from the ledge before any mining took place. The quarry has produced fabulous specimens of many minerals, but is best known for its rare pseudo-cubic quartz crystals. You can read about these specimens in our Mini-Magazine, 2005 edition. The mine is inactive as of 2006, but may be reopened in the future. ![]() ![]() ![]() | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
