With a history of occasional prospecting, this was just a pit for a long time. But in 1998, the Orchard Pit became a quarry and gem beryl of unbelievable color and quality have come to light ever since. The crystals (gem or specimen grade) recovered to date are the best ever found in North America and some of the colors are unique - especially the orange. Record phenakite crystals have also been found, along with associated minerals of this type of pegmatite.
