(Closed to the General Public - Exclusive collecting access through Poland Mining Camps only!)
The oldest pegmatite location in Maine, World Class gem tourmaline was discovered here around the 1820's and it has basically been a mineral and gem collecting quarry ever since. This is the flower of Maine's mineral wealth and the type locality for a number of rare minerals. Well documented ever since its discovery, everyone has to visit this premier location once in their life.

The good news this year is that the Mount Mica has been reopened and work has already started. Although closed to the public, access may be obtained through Poland Mining Camps per their schedule. The Workshop will have access to the new information and workings in 2006.
The book is a reproduction copy of The Tourmaline, by A. C. Hamlin who mined here circa 1870-1890's. He probably was mining in the area on the right hand side of this picture of the quarry (arrow). The color plates of tourmaline crystals in this book and his other publication, The History of Mount Mica, were probably recovered in this area. Reproduction copies of both books are available at Rubellite Press.
