| Estes Quarry Mineral List Baldwin, Cumberland Co., Maine (Collecting with permission only!) This active quarry is a commercial crushed stone business. Started in 1997, it is operated by the Estes Brothers. No true classification of the geology exposed in the quarry has been made, but it appears to be granitic and pegmatic, laced with basalt-like or mafic dikes. It is famous for the beautiful phosphate mineralization found and is a priceless collecting locale for local micromounters. For Maine, the various phosphate crystals are very large at times. New minerals will be added to this mineral list in the future, as many are under examination as of this posting. We must thank Gene Bearss of Sanford, Maine and Woodrow Thompson of the Maine Geological Survey for their efforts in examining and writing about this new mineral location in Maine. We must also thank the Estes Brothers and family for their generosity in allowing access to this location during the times of inactivity at the quarry. ![]() | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
