| | There are three basic and important Rules to remember when operating a Ultrasonic Cleaner. | | Rule 1: Never turn the machine on without a liquid in the tank. On the bottom side of the tank is a transducer or crystal which generates the sound. When the tank is empty or a rock rests on the tank bottom, that sound cannot escape the transducer and is reflected back upon itself. Simply, the crystal cooks itself and breaks. These transducers cannot be replaced, the whole machine must be replaced. Similar problems can occur if the temperature of the water is changed abruptly, i.e. using cold water to clean, then rinsing the tank out with hot water. | | Rule 2: Never let a rock/object rest on the bottom of the tank while the machine is on. Every object cleaned in the tank must be raised above the tank floor. For small items, I use a pair of rubber tipped tweezers. For larger objects, I sometimes hang the item from a string or simply hold it by hand. Overall, I find holding the items the best method in any size cleaner unit. By rotating and moving it around, I not only find the best cleaning spot in the tank, but I'm assured that all sides and crevices are cleaned. Some units have a basket or smaller tank which rests on the tank edges, suspending it within the tank. These do not touch the tank bottom and can be useful for batch preprocessing. Certain plastic or thin walled glass containers also work well, but you will probably have to hold these within the tank. Even with these batch containers, I find I have to reclean most items one at a time, to remove all of the grime. | | Rule 3: Never put your fingers in the water of an operating unit. Putting your fingers in the water of an operating unit will causes bone degeneration and eventually arthritis of the joints. Your tissue is mostly water, so the sound causes the same damage as it does to dirt and mud. This effect is accumulative, so never do it! Shut off the machine before putting your fingers in. |
