Pegmatites
by: David London The Canadian Mineralogist special publication, No. 10 ISBN: 978-0-921294-47-4 hardcover; color; 347 pp. Released: May, 2009 click image or title for pricicng Part 1 deals with the complex theories of pegmatites, the types and classifications of pegmatites, plus an overview description and imagery of them and the many minerals they contain. Consider all of this information a complete review of the general theories on pegmatites in play today. Dr. London does a wonderful job of presenting this complex subject matter with a comprehensive approach and writing style. Undergraduate college students and enthusiasts will easily be able to follow most, if not all of the material, or at least be able to use this volume for further study and research. Sixty percent of the book, called "Part 2, Origins," is a treatise or monograph of Dr. London's current research into pegmatites, much of which has come from his research laboratory. This material offers wonderful new ideas and information, but I must to warn the reader that the material is more for the graduate student or professional geologists. Quoted from his book's release, Part 2 "consolidates London's petrological model of internal pegmatite evolution, and compares it with other concepts." |

An African Career
An African Challenge by: M. Bettencourt Dias In An African Career, we learn about a young geologist's career in the African bush. Dias grew up in Mozambique and was the first man from that country to receive a scholarship to an American mining school (the Colorado School of Mines), where he graduated in mining geology. We learn about the geological expeditions he joins upon his return to Mozambique as a mining geologist. In An African Challenge, the author gives a fascinating account of his experiences in Mozambique during a time when social and political change began sweeping the continent. There are many descriptions about the pegmatites and gemstones he encountered, making fascinating reading. The technical challenges he faces are only the beginning in this remarkable story. Despite personal hardship and loss, the author's love for Africa never dies. "The people-like the grass after a wild fire-will always re-emerge with strength and vibrancy, to live like Africans, and to be Africans." A nice, easy, enjoyable read! |
