Pegmatology:
Pegmatite Mineralogy, Petrology and Petrogenesis
Authors: Dr. W. "Skip" Simmons, Dr. Karen Webber, Alexander Falster, James Nizamoff.

Introducing the Workshop Course book and very first textbook ever written about Pegmatites. For the very first time in geological literary history, there is now a book devoted to the study of pegmatites, a volume sorely needed for centuries. Our faculty has spent two years developing this book as a reference tool for the Maine Pegmatite Workshop, but should be in everyone's library . This book and the information it contains is written at the mid-level "student" of pegmatites. The authors have written this as a guide for further study and/or research on the part of the reader, with the hopes that the reader's questions can be answered.

For anyone who can't attend the Maine Pegmatite Workshop, where you receive a copy of this book at registration, you can purchase this book by following this link to Rubellite Press or clicking on the book. Rubellite Press is the publishing arm of the Maine Pegmatite Workshop.

The Author's initially wrote this book for the Maine Pegmatite Workshop. They realized the need for a book on pegmatites, to serve as a reference tool on this topic for the Workshop. Since the Workshop is about all pegmatites, not just those from Maine, the text is applicable world-wide.

We hope that this book will meet the needs of anyone interested in learning more about pegmatites. It is not written for the professional mineralogist or petrologist, but it does contain a sufficiently comprehensive coverage of the topic which is perfect for the life student, pegmatite miner, college student and enthusiast. The serious reader can develop a thorough understanding of pegmatite structure, mineralogy and genesis.

First Edition, soft cover, 176 pages, @300 color images, black & white charts and graphs, 8 ½ x 11.

A brand new, well crafted book for the pegmatite enthusiast, intermediate student, and professional geologist, with serious interests in the subject matter. Written in two distinct parts, this volume is full of gorgeous colored images and graphics, on high quality paper, and even includes a CD of the images contained in the book. The illustrations alone are worth the cost of this hardcover volume. But there is one caveat - Part 2 of the volume may be too technical for the average enthusiast.

Part 1 deals with the complex theories of pegmatites, the types and classifications of pegmatites, plus an overview description and imagery of them and the many minerals they contain. Consider all of this information a complete review of the general theories on pegmatites in play today. Dr. London does a wonderful job of presenting this complex subject matter with a comprehensive approach and writing style. Undergraduate college students and enthusiasts will easily be able to follow most, if not all of the material, or at least be able to use this volume for further study and research.

Sixty percent of the book, called "Part 2, Origins," is a treatise or monograph of Dr. London's current research into pegmatites, much of which has come from his research laboratory. This material offers wonderful new ideas and information, but I must to warn the reader that the material is more for the graduate student or professional geologists. Quoted from his book's release, Part 2 "consolidates London's petrological model of internal pegmatite evolution, and compares it with other concepts."

An African Career
An African Challenge

by: M. Bettencourt Dias

In this remarkable account, a mining geologist faces social and technical challenges while discovering and developing mines in Mozambique. Pegmatite and gemstones stories are mentioned often.

In An African Career, we learn about a young geologist's career in the African bush. Dias grew up in Mozambique and was the first man from that country to receive a scholarship to an American mining school (the Colorado School of Mines), where he graduated in mining geology. We learn about the geological expeditions he joins upon his return to Mozambique as a mining geologist.

In An African Challenge, the author gives a fascinating account of his experiences in Mozambique during a time when social and political change began sweeping the continent. There are many descriptions about the pegmatites and gemstones he encountered, making fascinating reading. The technical challenges he faces are only the beginning in this remarkable story.

Despite personal hardship and loss, the author's love for Africa never dies. "The people-like the grass after a wild fire-will always re-emerge with strength and vibrancy, to live like Africans, and to be Africans." A nice, easy, enjoyable read!
