The "Design Concepts & Concerns" course is offered to all students in the Under Graduate and Post Graduate Programmes for Design at the National Institute of Design. The objective of this course is to introduce students to Design thinking and action and provide an introduction to design methods and processes as applied to all areas of design.
This course has been offered by Prof M P Ranjan to the foundation programme at NID since 1988 and over the years it has evolved from being called "Design Methodologies" to the present incarnation it has two forms, one for the UG programme and the second for the PG programmes in design. This year all PG disciplines at NID chose to offer this course as part of their regular curricullum. NID currently offers 11 PG disciplines which are bnroadly divided into three major Faculty streams, namely, Textile & Apparel Design, Communication design and Industrial design Faculties. The course was therefore offered to three batches, each of two weeks duration.
Batch 1 included 25 PG students from the Textile related disciplines of Textile Design (TD), Apparel Design & Merchandising (AMD) and Lifestyle & Accessory Design (LAD) disciplines.
Batch 2 included 65 Communications faculty students from the following disciplines: Graphic Design (GD), Film & Video Programming (FVP), Animation Design (AD),( the traditional disciplines) and New Media Design (NMD), Software & User Interface Design (SUID) and Information & Digital design (IDD) and due to scheduling reasons 4 students from the Toy Design discipline were also included in this batch.
Batch 3 included the Industrial Design faculty students from the following disciplines: Product Design, Furniture Design and Ceramic Design. Further two students from Toy Design who could not join the first group were accomodated in this batch of 45 students.
