Design Concepts & Concerns 2003

Design Concepts & Concerns was offered in 2003 to two batches of students, each of two week duration in October 2003. The first batch included students from Textile Design and Apparel Merchandising Design disciplines and the second batch included Product Design, Furniture Design, Ceramic Design and Lifestyle & Accessory Design students.

The theme for the year was Mahatma Gandhi's Khadi and Village Industries since the city of Ahmedabad was the home to the Gandhi's liberation movement that set in motion many lofty ideals that we wished to return to with design thinking.

Students worked at the Institute and in the field interviewing and observing activities at numerous Gandhian and Khadi establishments in the city. They built models to refine their understanding and to critically reappraise themselves of the current situation and to imagine future possibilities. Using tools and attitudes of "Design Concepts & Concerns" as it is taught at NID they visualised scenarios that they genuinely felt had the best possible chance of succes in managing the change that was needed, all with feeling and conviction.

The work process and the results of teaching are shown in the picture gallary links below.
