An Executive Summary: 2002 January to 2004 June:

Prof. M P Ranjan
Project Head, NID-BCDI
Head, NID Centre for Bamboo Initiatives

Let me use this occasion to checklist the achievements of our efforts in the past two and a half years, ever since we were given the green signal by the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts, Government of India, DC(H) to go ahead with the establishment of this important Institute for the use of design in the exploding bamboo sector of India that is expected to grow to over to over 26,840 Crore Rupees by 2015. (Planning Commission Report on National Mission on Bamboo pp 101). The work of my teams of design students, design faculty and craftsmen has contributed in no small measure in the current impetus that is seen in the bamboo sector across India. Let me give here a brief list of these achievements as I see it, you may have other views on this matter. After the approval of the feasibility report written by me and submitted in December 2001 we started our initiatives in the BCDI on 15 January 2002 with the formal approval and with funding from of the DC(H).

Education of Craftsmen:
160 bamboo craftsmen trained on a syllabus and curriculum pain-stakingly innovated through many iterations for the first time in India to make design entrepreneurs from members of the crafts community. Five six month programmes and three three month training programmes have been completed and the alumni of this programme are the first available trained human resources on which this growth can take place. They are already involved in the field and we expect to see incremental gains to come as and when these people establish themselves as leaders in the field.

Opportunities for NID Students:
35 design students trained through project sponsorship made available through the BCDI project opportunities. These are the care team that the country can draw upon to realise the promise of this sector. Three are already employed by INBAR and three others are employed by State initiatives in Uttaranchal, Mizoram and Assam. More are expected to be placed due to their available knowledge and expertise, perhaps the only people in the country with formal instruction in bamboo utilisation supported with field and lab experience to develop new products in this material.

Field Research Opportunities:
Besides design projects, over twelve documentation and field research projects have been sponsored and completed, all of which have provided rich data and insights into this complex material and its utilisation. Sixteen students from textiles, Product Design, Furniture and Ceramic design have benefited from this sponsorship that was internal to the project.

Diploma Projects:
Two Diploma Projects were sponsored, one from NID that of Rebecca Rubens from the Furniture Design discipline at NID and the other from IICD, Jaipur, that of Aarti Yadav from the Craft Design discipline.

Faculty Development Opportunities:
Twenty faculty colleagues and visiting designers have contributed to and benefited from travel to Agartala for first hand exposure and experience building and teaching at the BCDI. These faculty will be the real thought leaders of the sector in the future as it grows and attracts a lot of opportunistic band-wagoners, who would be only after the money that would be provided by the growing Government interest in the subject.

Training & Development Workshops
Besides the regular education programmes over ten training and development workshops have been conducted in the last three years which has benefited another 100 local craftsmen in Agartala, Guwahati, and Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh (during elective workshop at NID) and in addition numerous field level workshops and discussion meet were organised in Nalchar, Churilam, Katlamara, Guwahati and Ahmedabad influencing a huge number of craftsmen in the field. All this is documented in digital photographs and progress of which was reported to the Outreach activity and the client, DC(H) from time to time.

Seminars and Workshops of Intellectual Nature:
The NID-BCDI has conducted and participated in over ten major workshops and seminars with contribution of papers and presentations. Forest Certification WS by the IIFM, Bhopal was conducted at BCDI while the BCDI team attended, IHC WS of DC(H), Bamtech, Guwahati by CBTC, World bamboo Congress, New Delhi to name only a few......................................to see the full text of this paper see "MPR Papers on Bamboo" folder in the Archives link below.
