Faithful

Just got through listening to Faithful, by Stewart O'Nan and Stephen Kind. The book chronicles the thoughts and feelings of the two hardcore Boston Red Sox fans during the 2004 baseball season...

Here's the Amazon link and the Audible link and the iTMS link.

I like baseball but it's not one of my favorite sports. And growing up in the Southwest, the Albuquerque Dukes were a farm team for LA so I grew up a Dodgers fan. After school, I tended to float around. The Twins in Minnesota, the Braves in Carolina, any team that covered in Vegas, etc.

Faithful is a good listen. It took me a little while to get used to King's posting but about a third of the way in, his stuff started to sparkle and added a human interest element that was a joy to listen to.

The narrators (one for O'Nan, one for King) did a very good job as well. It took less than a week of casual listening to go through the 15 hours or so of unabridged copy. And, I have even started taking a closer look at Red Sox stories on the sports sites and the AL East standings for the defending world champs.

The best parts were when the Sox were in a swoon and the hated Yankees were motoring along. Both King and the obsessively fanatical O'Nan were enjoyable to listen to in their emails and journals.

Now, that baseball season is once again getting near, Faithful is a pretty good way to spend a few hours. And, this time, King's book finally did a hell of an ending.
