We will be adding more from Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt so check back. We even have a favorite dish of George W. Bush!

Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the Peoples' Liberty's Teeth. - George Washington.
George Washington ate his dinner at 3 pm when he dined with his family or at 4 pm when he entertained guests. The Washingtons were also known to put on a good spread. President Washington liked to have a light supper at 9 pm before he went to bed. One of his favorite meals consisted of hot cornbread and cheese, fruit compote and nuts and a little wine. Martha always added strong coffee. Here is her recipe for Mount Vernon Cornbread.
Cornmeal, Flour, Sugar, Baking Powder, Salt, Milk, Egg, Shortening.
Mix and sift all dry ingredients: 3/4 cup cornmeal, 1 cup flour, 1/3 cup sugar, 3 teaspoons baking powder, 3/4 teaspoon salt. Add 1 cup milk, 1 well-beaten egg, and 2 tablespoons melted shortening (butter, margarine, or oil). Bake the mixture in a shallow buttered baking pan 20 minutes in a hot (425 degree F.) oven. Serve in honor of General Washington piping hot with butter and honey.
Martha Washington often made this treat for her famous husband, who reportedly loved it.
Tart Apples, Sugar, Bacon, Maple Surup.
Peel apples and cut them into 1 inch cubes. Meanwhile fry the bacon in a heavy skillet. When done, drain bacon on paper towel and keep warm. Leave 1/4 cup bacon fat in teh skillet and fill it with apple cubes. Sprinkle 2 or 3 teaspoons sugar on the apple cubes. Cover and cook slowly until tender. Remove cover and turn, keeping the apples shape. Let them brown lightly, then place on a steaming platter surround with the bacon. Drizzle lightly with warm maple surup and serve.
President Washington's favorite vegetable was the onion. Here are two of his favorite recipes.
Onions, Salt, Pepper, Honey, Butter.
Cut 10 medium-sized onions in half crosswise, butter each one and arrange in a baking dish. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Pour 1 teaspoon honey over each onion. Dot with butter (4 tablespoon in all). Bake uncovered in a hot (450 degree F.) overn for 45 minutes. Serve plain or on strips of hot toast garnished with parsley that has been dipped in vinegar.
This dish was served at Washington's farewell dinner to his officers at Fraunces's Tavern in New York, 1783.
Onions, Egg, Mincemeat.
Peel one onion for each person and force at the cores (parboiling slightly may be required). Fill the openings with mincemeat. Beat 1 egg and glaze the opening on each side, where the meat was inserted, so it will not drop out. Then fry the onions in butter or cooking oil.
Onions, Egg, Canned Beef Hash.
Cut onions in half. Remove peels and any rings you don't want to eat (I leave at least two rings). Open a can of Beef Hash and fry in a pan to desired doneness. Pack hash into onion halves. Beat 1 egg and glaze the top and bottom of each half. Fry onions in oil until tender. Very yummy!

A government that is large enough to supply everything you need is large enough to take everything you have. - Thomas Jefferson.
Thomas Jefferson loved good food, particularly "Potatoes fired in the French manner". Today we would say that President Jefferson was a great fan of French Fries. One 3 inch New York Cut, do not marinate.
Start a fire, outdoors, in a safe location. Let the fire burn for sometime until the coals are white-hot.
Put a great quantity of salt and some pepper into a small pan. Dip both sides and all edges of the steak into the pan until it is completely covered with salt and pepper.
With a pair of tongs, lay the steak directly on the top of the coals. After about a minute, turn the steak over to start the other side. A 3 inch steak may need 7 to 9 minutes on one side and 5 to 6 minutes on the other, depending on the heat of the coals.
The only way to tell if the steak is done is to take it off the fire after it has cooked about 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Make a small incision in the meat to determine doneness. Once done to your liking, place steak on a board. Using a wire brush or a stiff bristle brush, rub the meat hard to take off the salt and ashes. Transfer meat to a clean board and cut it diagonally across the grain in slices about 3/4 inch thick.

As the years progress, Ronald Reagan will go down in history as one of America's greatest presidents. I was but a child when he was first elected and although I was too young to understand much of politics, I remember looking into that great man's eyes and saying to myself, there is a good man. I believe that more than anything it was Reagan's infectious positive attitude and noble sense of America's destinity that inspired me. He let me know that it was good to be American, and I still believe him. Here are a few of his favorite treats.

It is not really appropriate to describe this dish as one of Joseph Smith's favorites. We know that he liked smoked ham but as for Johnnycakes? The following story may illustrate the point best:
"In my early years I used to often eat at the table with Joseph the Prophet. At one time he was called to dinner. I being at play in the room with his son Joseph, he called us to him, and we stood one on each side of him. After he had looked over the table he said, 'Lord, we thank Thee for this Johnny cake, and ask Thee to send us something better. Amen.' The corn bread was cut and I received a piece from his hand.
Before the bread was all eaten, a man came to the door and asked if the Prophet Joseph was at home. Joseph replied he was, whereupon the visitor said, 'I have brought you some flour and a ham.'
Joseph arose and took the gift, and blessed the man in the name of the Lord. Turning to his wife, Emma, he said, 'I knew the Lord would answer my prayer.'" - John Lyman Smith.

Love him or hate him, Rush Limbaugh has done more to promote the freedom of political speech in the last twenty years than any other single American. Just as conservatives around the world have Rush to thank for eloquently speaking out on the visionary nature of conservative issues, we must also pause and thank his wife Marta. Since their marriage, Marta has quite possibly extended Rush's life through diet and exercise. Thus ensuring his "golden voice resounds across the fruited plains" for another twenty years. Rush is reportedly a great fan of Bananas Foster; two versions of which follow:
1/3 cup butter
2 cups brown sugar
3/4 ounce 151 Barcardi Rum (or use Rum flavoring instead)
1 dash allspice
2 oranges, juiced
3 bananas, sliced
Melt the butter, add the sugar and melt over low heat until the mixture is thick and bubbly. Add the rum and flame. When the flame dies, add allspice and orange juice. Blend in the pan until well mixed. The consistency should be syrup like. Add the bananas and heat for 1 minutes. Ladle the sauce onto bowls of a fine French vanilla ice cream. Serves 8 Ditto-heads.
2 Eggs
1/4 c Brown sugar
1/2 ts Vanilla
1/4 ts Rum extract
1 1/2 c Skim or 1% low-fat milk
12 slices of Banana, 1/4" thick
Ground nutmeg; optional
4 ts Banana liqueur, brandy, rum or rum flavoring; optional
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In medium bowl, beat together
eggs, sugar and flavorings until well-blended. Stir in milk. Place
4 lightly greased 6oz custard cups in medium baking pan. Place
3 banana slices in each cup. Pour egg mixture over bananas. Sprinkle
with nutmeg, if desired. Place pan on rack in preheated oven.
Pour very hot water into pan to within 1/2" of top of custards.
Bake until inserted knife comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes.
Remove promptly from hot water and place on wire rack. If desired,
while custards are still hot, pour 1 ts liqueur over each custard.
Using long fireplace match, ignite liqueur. Allow liqueur to burn
off to serve warm or refrigerate to serve chilled. Makes 4 Servings.

Called America's Moses, Brigham Young did more to secure and settle the American West than any other man in U.S. History. In one of our saddest chapters, the Mormons (who prefer to be known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) were the only citizens ever to have been ordered exterminated by the US government for practicing their Constitutional right to Freedom of Religion. Their struggle after the murder of their first prophet and their eventual prosperity in the western frontier is some of the most exciting reading in Western lore.
