  G C G C
On Canal street in April when its 60 and the snow is melting fast
          G C G C
it's still shady in the morning when you're laughing in your t-shirt running past
                  D C
In Tompkins Square Park, a couple is meeting
            D C
say what you want but I feel my heart beating
            G
cause I love springtime in New York,
C G C
springtime in New York I do

G C G C
Springtime in New York when it's May and the leaves are on the trees
G C G C
when demolishing a building brings the smell of 1890 to the breeze
        D C
on first avenue our couple is fighting
             D C
springtime is wild, New York is exciting
          G
and I love springtime in New York,
C G C
springtime in New York I do

A D A D
well springtime in New York, in thirty days will come the sticky summer nights
             A D A D
and if you've been in New York city in July you know when I say sticky I'm right
        E D
on first avenue our couple is breaking up
       E D
evicted too, the lame must be shaken up
          A
but I love springtime in New York,
D A
springtime in New York I do
A
springtime in New York,
D A
springtime in New York I do

Notes

  1. I was at a recent JoJo concert and he mentioned that he wrote this song before the recent sad events in New York - I am sure, and it would be interesting to find out, that he would change this line now. UPDATE (from Patrick): Also, to answer the question you put on the bottom of the page, I've seen Jonathan about five times since 9/11, all in NYC, and everytime he's sung "Springtime in New York," he's kept the line about "demolishing a building" the same.  The first time he played here after 9/11, in early October, he gave the same disclaimer before the song that he seems to have given when you saw him.  I remember him saying that he "wrote this song before all the bad stuff happened."  I remember that quote because of the odd/child-like phrasing.
  2. A couple of years later and the line hasn't been changed - you can hear people actually laughing at this line on the dvd
