Special thanks to Joseph Chiu for taking a lot of these pictures.
Video
weddingvideo.mov (~460MB): This is the wedding video. I took many hours of wedding video and edited
it down to a 13 minute video clip using iMovie.
You need Quicktime to view the movie.
NOTE: This file is on the temp drive on the UGCS cluster. Let me know if you have any problems downloading the file
What is going on in this video?
Here is a scene by scene breakdown:
- "Gopal Niwas" This is the guest house we rented in Jodhpur, Rajasthan
for our stay. This is a traditional house with a square courtyard in the
middle with the rooms along the perimeter.
- "The Mehndi" All the ladies were putting henna on their hands and feet
before the wedding events started. This took place in the courtyard of the
guest house. Here is an rough translation of what the ladies were singing
(in Marwari):
"Come under my umbrella. Shubha is getting wet."
- "Ring ceremony" This event took place at her house with her Grandfather
performing the main ceremonies. Interesting tidbit here: I gave my ring size
earlier so they can have the appropriate ring made. I didn't take into
account that my hand would swell up a bit in India. Result was the ring was
too small to go on my ring finger. Her aunt (a doctor who lives in Ohio),
being very helpful, decided to try to force the ring on my finger. After a
bit of forcing a bunch of people were making some hilarious (and loud)
comments and she had to pulled back (if she wasn't pulled back she would
have continued to try to get the ring on). ;-)
- "Pithi" This is basically the event where people smear yellow, gooey
stuff all over me. Idea is that this stuff is supposed to cleanse your skin
and make you glow afterwards.
- "Music Program" This event was a music and dance performance night. Some
people put on a parody of how we met skit. Kim Lumbard
played Shubha.
- "Meeting of families" This event was where the two families officially
met. This took place in the courtyard at the guest house.
- "Wedding Procession" This was on the night of the wedding. This was the
wedding procession from our house to her house. Basically it consisted of me
riding on the horse and chariot (no, it was brighter than that ;-) ) while
everyone danced and sang in the streets of Jodhpur. There were several
wedding processions going on at the same time...not to mention the normal
car and cow traffic. NOTE: Since it was dark we had a portable gas generator
to power the lamp posts carried by people.
- "Reception" No, we are not married yet. Generally (in Rajasthan) the
reception occurs before the wedding. This took place on the open grounds
next to her house.
- "Wedding ceremony" This was a relatively quiet ceremony in the backyard
of her house. The ceremony started around 11:30PM on Saturday Nov 18 and
ended some time around 3AM on Sunday Nov 19 (I forget the exact start and
end times).
- "Welcome home" This was the morning after the wedding ceremony (Sunday
Nov 19). The tradition is that on the way home people will ask me who I
brought home. They will then ask me to physically pick her up to show that I
can support her ("feats of strength" as someone pointed out). Instead of
doing this on the way home we did this in the driveway of the guest house.
Yes, several people asked for me to pick her up. ;-)
