My daughter brought this jade plant home from school many years ago in a paper cup when it was smaller even than the tiny sprout in the lower left. It has since grown more than tenfold in size, completely displacing the aloe with which it shares it's pot, and which once dwarfed it in size. The pot sits on the floor of my studio by the full length picture window, soaking up the sun. This jade plant always suggests warmth and sunshine to me, so that's how I've rendered it here, with sharp, linear contrasts of light and dark. After completing this painting, I realized that, in a way, it's a portrait of my daughter - she's grown to be taller than her mother during the same years that this once tiny jade plant has matured. |
