28.Jan.2004 - Listening to (Rhett Miller) - When Will This Week End? 6:04pm

I'm gonna sing this song forever about a girl that I once knew, and how she is always leaving.  This is what I do.

This week is crawling by... I am buried by work.  Tonight, I'm working on this Operations Management case where this insurance company has a really messed up infrastructure and I have to fix it.  Then I get to work on our review game for our psych kids.  Thank GOODNESS that the psych meeting tonight was cancelled due to inclement weather because it just makes my life a nicer place... the walk over to East Hall is what really takes the time.  Besides, psych is going well right now on the whole.  We watched this 60 minutes clip about Mary Kay in my Organizational Behavior class today.  Mary Kay is a religious cult.  Boycott them.  If you know a mary kay lady, she probably sold her soul to the company.  Though not everyone else in my section feels the same way, it looked like a pretty fucked up deal to me.  I'm probably paying too little attention to my classes, but as long as i keep up on the reading, I feel ok.  It's been pretty rough, though.  I also need to work on the statistics homework since prof. majeske said it would take a while.

in other news, i got onto Borders' closed list... still waiting to hear from others, but honestly, as long as i have borders in my back pocket, I'm not too worried.  One intriguing thing this week is that Microsoft posted a marketing position just this week (after they kept insisting that they wouldnt be hiring) that is going to be strictly bidding-based, so i think i'll save my points for that since it seems more intersting than a lot of other opportunities out there right now.  I keep telling myself that i'm going to get my act in gear with some off-campus stuff, but its hard to find time!  I have to find time to relax because i've been getting so little sleep that i'm fatigued and unproductive much of the time anyways.  My reflected-best-self project is helping, though, and it's gratifying to send stuff back to people who respond to me.

brendan and chris have been working their asses off on recADDords stuff recently.  www.recADDords.us is up and kicking, and www.purevolume.com/recADDords has streaming audio though when i last checked one of the song titles was wrong.  i still like my little drawing for a logo, but you know.  anyways, kudos to them for doing some cool stuff.  Its time to (continue) to do work.

26.Jan.2004 - Listening to (Get Up Kids) - Maxin' 5:39 pm

Lots going on.  I've been trying to download some Joseph Arthur - but having little luck.  If anyone has uploaded any of his stuff onto their computer, send it to me over AIM because I am in need.  Also, I need some suggestions as to new stuff that I may not have heard.  That means you, Ben, Brendan and Chris!  I am feeling apathetic as to the follow-up phone calls I need to make by tomorrow to people for trying to get more interviews.  I definitely need to find a good time to do it - I was thinking right at 9 because people won't be involved yet, and most of them won't submit their lists until tuesday evening or sometime wednesday.  Well, Borders is the only really significant one anyways.  And i already know Suzann, the woman conducting the search, from the day in the life program i did there.  I mailed a thank-you to P&G - hopefully it gets there before they actually make the decision - I doubt that anyone else went to the trouble to do a hand-written thank you, so that ought to get me some bonus points.

The weekend was short, but fairly good as far as weekends go.  Friday night, margaret's dad and step mom took us to Zanzibar and I had the duck and it was wonderful.  Anyone who is ann arbor for a meal should definitely go there.  Saturday, we went to Zingerman's and i had a great portabella mushroom and oven dried tomato sauce sandwich, and then we walked around downtown and checked out some of the shops and also walked around campus.  It was nice to give a tour of the business school - kind of empowering.  Then we went to the hockey game sat. night, and if it wasn't the best game i've ever been to, it was close.  We won 7-0 against Western Michigan, who was actually supposed to be really good, and just after the seventh goal, with about a minute left, there was an all-out brawl.  Everyone on the ice went 1-on-1.  It was so sweet.  Brown got on top of his guy and got his helmet off and kept slamming his head on the ice, while Woodford not only ripped off the helmet of the guy he was fighting, but his jersey and shoulderpads!  It was awesome and really fun, though I don't think judith (margaret's step-mom) could understand why we constantly disparage the other team.  I tried to explain that 1) the home ice advantage is what attracts so many top recruits here and 2) its just damned fun.

Sunday I just did too much homework for my health, but i did make skyline for dinner which was amazing, and today when i woke up, my clock said 8:30, which is all fine and good except that I had to be at class at 8:40.  Amazingly I made it just a minute or so late - and many people came in after me.  Between classes I went to the post office and got a bubble tea.  I got to present this thing on inventory buildup and buffering in Operations Management, which was cool, and then met with my marketing group to discuss our project proposal - looks like we may be working on the Safe Sex Store.  I think it will be a really interesting project, and I doubt anyone else would be willing to touch the subject.  We'll see how Prof. Yoon reacts. I'm (off) to find dinner and accomplish something.

 21.Jan.2004 - Listening to (Grandaddy) - Apprehensive 10:12 pm

So i am awesome and i figured out how to get the watermark feature to work in html.  If you'll notice, as you scroll down the page, the background drawing stays in the same place!  It rules.  I am not sure exactly how much I like it, but its pretty cool anyways, so i'll leave it.  I'm studying up - preparing hypothetical answers to hypothetical questions for my interview tomorrow - they told me what they would be asking for, and that they were taking as many people as are qualified, so I'm pretty confident about my chances - at least a bit less nervous than I would have otherwise been.  I think I just need to arrange my ideas on paper and take care of things from there.  I'm sure I'll update as to how it goes 'n such. (Insert elevator music here) Good evening.

21.Jan.2004 - Listening to (Ass Ponys) - TRIUMPH - 1:14 pm

I drew that earlier on in the semester, and i kinda like it.  Chris, let me know what you think.  One thing that I do love about FrontPage is my ability to change fonts at will.  Someday, I might get crazy, but for now, I really like the black and white motif - I want to make a nice pencil piece to put at the top of this page, but I'm not sure what I want to draw yet.  look out for that.  So I just looked at my OM syllabus and it turns out that all the case work i did this weekend was not for naught since I actually have no other reading assigned for today.  This means i have over an hour of unexpected free time to enjoy! So i can relate a bit about the past couple of days.  Since my P&G interview is tomorrow, the convention is to have a "Pre-Night" before interviews and take all the candidates out to dinner - so I did that last night and basically P&G has decided that they can take anyone they believe to be competent for the job - since they dont use strict quotas and such, this makes me a bit more relaxed.  There's another girl from cincinnati interviewing too and she was pretty cool.  After that, some of us had been invited to Pizza House for a Kraft get-to-know-the-candidates kind of deal.  It blew.  The food was good and I talked to Henry, Adam, Mimi, Keri and Amee about random b-school issues while trying to avoid actually talking to the Kraft reps.  Kraft does have an office in Madison, which would be cool to interview for, but it doesn't look like they'll have an internship position there this year.  Oh well. On a final note, I'm very pleased that Edwards did so well in Iowa, as I firmly believe that a true candidate has to be able to win in the south, so this pretty much precludes everyone but Edwards and Clark, whom I like anyways.  Also, Daschle did an excellent job focusing on our "Opportunity Society" in his rebuttal to the (sad) State of the Union Address. (Please don't kick my busted heart too far)

21.Jan.2004 - Listening to (The Roots) - Mid-Weekin' It - 12:56 pm

The weekend was long - but not in such a great way.  I probably spent 25 hours in Kresge (the business school library) doing group work - and am currently a bit behind on reading.  In fact, I'm actually putting off some OM reading right now - i'll get it done before class at 2:30.  I've really been enjoying brendan's site because of the way he uses words.  I can feel his emotion as i read, even if i don't exactly know the context.  He's some kind of a kid.  I haven't talked to him or chris or ben recently, and i should probably go ahead and do that.  I think my cell phone is finally dying though - i guess i've had it for 4 years and i should have expected it - something keeps rattling around and the reception keeps getting messed up.  Unfortunately, since its under my brother's name, i have to wait until i'm back in cincinnati to figure something out - maybe they'll let me keep the number and change it to my name if i buy a new phone.  We'll have to see... I have nothing more to say for the moment (fade out)

16.Jan.2004 - Listening to (Fountains of Wayne) - Friday Night - 10:32 pm

Well... its friday night.  I made it through the week... kinda.  I am about as unexcited as can be for this 3 day weekend.  I've been feeling semi-sick for the last 2 days - soreish/swollen throat, upset stomach, and i have a ridiculous quantity of group work at my behest.  Except that i'm not really in control of it, its in control of me.  After another successful teaching section of psychology, I spent the better part of the afternoon working on my operations management case - we're studying the processing of cranberries in this factory.  Its fairly confusing and the questions they ask are deliberately a hassle.  I got home and margaret came over and we watched some tv together and i relaxed a bit, but then i got a start on my business stats homework - working with that group tomorrow at noon.  After business stats tomorrow, I'm supposed to be working on both my marketing and OM cases - we'll see how that works out - before the mktg case, i still have to do a 30-60 min. interview of my mom on why she bought her furnace.  fun stuff - its actually pretty interesting.

So back to tonight... I was supposed to go to the akpsi rush bbq to meet the rushes and then party with all the folks after that - always a pretty fun time.  margaret is also currently having a party, but i couldn't get too excited about that because her roommates and their friends are belligerent and i don't want to deal with that anyways.  sooooo, I just ended up feeling like crap when it came down to time to do something tonight, so i did nothing.  I treated margaret to tubby's for her half-birthday, though i felt too sick to eat anything, so i just watched her enjoy.  i came home and tried to beat the colts with the patriots on madden 2004, but i am not very good at it, so i lost and since then i've just been listening to bunches of good music and relaxing.  I think this semester is already giving me an ulcer, what with the ridiculous courses and our furnace going out and being sick.  Oh well.  I'm sure i'll survive.  I'm going to have some tea, get to bed early and then get up and interview my mom and do some work.  I guess i'm just having a really hard time enjoying the free time when i know that i have to be constantly productive if i want to make sure i keep up with my homework.  ok, now i'm just rambling.

having the album picture show up in iTunes is awesome - everyone should have iTunes because it is so much better than any other windows compatible music player.  I'm tired.

14.Jan.2004 - Listening to (Whiskeytown) - Snowy - 4:57 pm

So its been an exciting week so far.  Well, busy at least.  I got the interview with P&G and they scheduled me for the wonderful time of 8am next thursday.  I also got an interview with Unilever (basically the P&G of europe) for a similar position, but I am debating accepting it since there are probably people on the waitlist who want the job much more than I.  Its unfair to interview for a job you probably wouldn't take even if you got it (though i could probably use the practice).  I guess they have offices in Chicago and Connecticut that I could potentially end up at... we'll see - the schedule comes out next week, so I'll just put off the decision until then.

Becky is yelling at me from downstairs, so I'm ignoring her until she comes up and talks to me... oh, she wanted to know if i took her extra key... what kind of a question is that?  I dont even know what key she was talking about... but whatever.  Earlier on today, I re-worked my cover letter because I'm awesome like that - I thought it needed to be a little more results-oriented, so now it is.  I am about to get slammed with group work - it seems as though its all going to have to be done on MLK day.  Thank goodness for the day off - too bad i have to spend it interviewing rushes and then working on my Operations Management case.  Margaret's house is having a party friday night for a whole bunch of not-really-clear reasons (I am definitely willing to celebrate Yauss leaving though! she is a bitch and a strange one at that) ... I probably can't go because of the rush BBQ and ensuing gathering that will inevitably be an excellent time.  I'm not really wanted over at Margaret's (besides by her) anyways.  Time to read... before I go, i will thank brendan for bringing his site back.  take 'er easy.

12.Jan.2004 - Listening to Jumper (3eb) - Long Day - 11:56 am

The weekend was good and bad.  The electricity decided to stop working all together because the fuses couldn't handle the space heaters.  So... we had no heat or electricity for basically the whole weekend.  The good news was that we beat Ohio State in hockey 3-2 friday night and 7-1 saturday night.  Our picture got on mgoblue.com since we're in the front row and all.  We're in the upper right corner of pictures 6 and 8 from friday night's game (which is where that link should take you).  That also means we were all over fox sports net since they had the game on tv, but no one taped it.  On a side note, Ohio State had a guy playing who is about 5 foot nothin'.  Friday night we jeered him for being a hobbit (he was sporting that curly mullet look), and by saturday night, we had organized cheers and the band learned a song from lord of the rings to play when he came on the ice.  It was a great time.  Glad the Patriots won, and the Packers should have won, but you can't always get what you want!

Anyways, today was busy... class from 830-1130, group work, class 230-5, more work, meeting for psych TAing 5-6, home now to do reading for tomorrow's classes.  However, we got a brand new furnace, so the house is toasty warm, and my new comforter arrived - i could have done with it arriving on thurs, fri, or saturday, but its kind of ironic that I ordered it just before our heat went out.  So... I will be amazingly warm as long as I want!

9.Jan.2004 - Listening to Dazed and Confused (Led Zeppelin) - Feeling Strangely Fine - 11:56 am

So the first week of classes has come to an end.  It wasn't even a full week and it seems like it lasted forever.  I guess I'm a bit more worried about class this semester than I was last.  Organizational Behavior and Consumer Behavior (marketing) seem like they're going to be pretty sweetassweet.  My 2 operations management science classes are scaring me a bit - statistics and general operations management.  Statistics should be easy, but it won't be, partly because of the curve and partly because it will just be using statistics in a totally different way than I have learned it previously.  I guess it makes it fair to people with no statistics background, but I was hoping that I could use mine to my advantage.  I need to get kicking on some homework and such, but I feel like I'm doing pretty well staying on top of things.

This morning was my first session with my honors intro Psych kids.  I can already tell that I love TAing.  McKeachie's lectures are amazing, even the second time around, and its really cool to have the opportunity to work with him and also to impart some of my own knowledge on these students.  I never really imagined myself as a teacher, but quite honestly, it doesn't seem like such a bad job.  At least it seems like it would be fulfilling to know that you are passing some of your knowledge along - and honors kids are awesome because you know that they care about it.  Anyways, Jenn and I are awesome and will rock the TA world this semester.  I'm looking forward to reading their journals and finding out about things that they relate to psychology in everyday life.

In other news, our furnace broke sometime yesterday and its about 50 degrees in our house right now.  I don't know when the guy is coming to fix it, but I swear that if it isn't fixed today (implying that they won't fix it on the weekend either), I will not pay my rent for the month, or at least I will pay to a lesser extent.  Oppenheimer can suck it - this is something that I'm not supposed to have to be dealing with.  So anyways, I was already a little sick to my stomach last night and came home as everyone went out for Ben Lawless' birthday at Scorekeepers because I was supposed to have a mock interview at 8.  That's when I found out that the furnace was out, and I ended up curling up in the smallest ball possible under all my blankets while wearing 3 layers of clothes including a winter hat and my sweatshirt hood pulled up over my head as well.  I slept pretty soundly, and got a good amount of sleep, but still felt awful upon waking up, and finding, to my chagrin that Becky had just showered and used up ALL of the hot water.  Its a recurring theme in my house.  So anyways, I was still sick and called the Business School's Office of Career Development and they were understanding about my not making it - I have another one scheduled for next tuesday anyways.

So... I laid on the couch curled up in blankets and watched cold pizza because that show is the best thing invented last year by far, and then went to Amer's and got a scone and a latte, but realized that I forgot some papers I needed for our class and came back and made some quick photocopies and trudged to Dennison in the 9 degree warmth of the morning to teach.  Class was awesome, though I think some people couldn't find the room - I'm sure they'll make it next week.  Then jenn and I set up an e-mail group for the class to discuss stuff on and for us to send out general e-mails on.

I'm back home now and totally pumped up for the hockey game tonight against Ohio State and then cocktail party at margaret's because I don't want to deal with all of the fools who will be having a party at my house.  Quite honestly, I hope the heat doesn't get turned back on so that their party is a bust.  Whatevva, I'm off to waste the afternoon away in enjoyment!
