Drive Thru:
This is an ongoing series of photographs inspired by 3 years of driving the blue highways and camping in the western states. It's a place (if so large an area can be called a place) of extremes. Both timeless and also existing only in the here and now.
There is an awesome other worldly beauty to much of the west . Many times I've come around a curve in the road and had to pull over to absorb what I was seeing.
On closer inspection, and the fact that I'm there observing it, the hand of man is manifest. Every inch of space is enclosed by wire fencing, pull offs are clearly defined and if you stop randomly on the side of the road a tractor trailer will blow by at 80 within inches. It's vast and yet clearly delineated.
These photographs explore the landscape as it's mediated by man . To beat a metaphor into the ground: The fences aren't edited out, they are the subject. As such the photographs aren't overtly narrative; they isolate and abstract in a purely photographic manner. However, they're inspired by the western united states and suffused with its light and I think a part of its beauty.
My cohort on these trips has been Melissa Finelli - a fantastic travel companion and a patient inspiration.
