What is it?
- a file (or document)
- PDF is an acronym for "Portable Document Format"
- invented by Adobe (the Photoshop people)
What is it used for?
- PDF files are used to share documents, regardless of operating system, original application, or fonts used
- PDF preserves images, graphics, fonts, and layouts intact
- BUT: normally cannot be edited by recipient
How do I read a PDF file?
- PDF files are read by Adobe's Acrobat Reader (free download from Adobe), or by Preview (which comes free with OS X)
- just double-click on any file with the extension .pdf, and it should open automatically with either Preview or Acrobat Reader
How do I create a PDF file?
- PDF can be made on a Mac which is running OS X, as follows:
- open the document you want to make into a PDF
- click on File > Print
- the "Print" dialog window opens
- click on PDF (in bottom left-hand of window)
- click on Save as PDF
- the "Save" dialog window opens
- type in an appropriate name; make sure the name ends in .pdf
- choose a location to save it to
- click on the Save button
