Our speaker Don Mason (don.mason@shaw.ca) was strongly of the opinion that the only application to use for genealogy was Reunion. It is extremely Mac-friendly. He outlined some of its many useful features. It currently sells for $99.00 (U.S.).

Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet: a categorized index to international genealogical resources; has over 200,000 website links

RootsWeb.Ancestry.com: advertises itself as the oldest and largest free genealogy site

FreeBMD Home Page: online access to the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales (not all transcribed yet)

UK BMD: This site provides links to many web sites that offer on-line transcriptions of UK births, marriages and deaths. Many sites offering UK census transcriptions are also linked from here.

GENUKI Home Page: United Kingdom and Ireland genealogy

National Archives of Canada: National Archives of Canada home page

ArchiviaNet: ArchiviaNet, the National Archives of Canada's online research and consultation tool, provides access to a variety of information resources related to the actual archival holdings

County Atlases for some Ontario Counties: The County Atlas Digital Project is a searchable database of the property owners' names which appear on the township maps in the county atlases

Soldiers of the First World War: Soldiers of the First World War (1914-1918), from the National Archives of Canada

Birth, marriage and death certificates: Certificates are issued by the General Register Office, England and Wales (covering 1837 - 2001), for a fee

Mormon records: extensive collection of records, from the Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Local Genealogy Groups

There is a new genealogy group, The Qualicum Family History Society, which meets in the Legion Hall in Qualicum Beach at 7.00pm on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

There is also a group which meets in Nanaimo.
