Time Machine is a program that is included with iLife on Mac
computers with Leopard. It allows you to make a complete backup of your
hard drive and then continues to make incremental backups each hour
after that. You can recover any file that was deleted since the backup
was made.
To use Time Machine, you must have an
external hard drive connected to your Mac via fire wire or USB. When
you connect the hard drive for the first time, a dialogue box will
appear asking if you want to use this drive with Time Machine. Say you
do and Time Machine will proceed to backup the entire hard drive onto
your external hard drive. This will take some time depending on the
amount of data on your hard drive. Once it is finished you are set to
go and can feel good that Time Machine is continually incrementally
backing up your hard drive every hour.
Lets say you deleted an email a month
ago and suddenly decided you need to get it back. Just open your email
program first then open Time Machine. Click on the large arrows to zoom
back and forth in time till you see the deleted email then select it
and click Restore. That’s it, the email is restored back to your email
program.
