Introduction:

The
Katherine  Stoklosa Middle School is the newest school building  in the  Lowell Public School Department.  Our state of the art school opened in the Fall of 2005 and features  a multimedia Library-Media Center , gymnasium, auditorium, multiple music  and art areas, and two high speed internet connected computer labs.  Our 7th Graders used the lab and library facilities frequently to better understand  and practice new math concepts this year. We have included our favorite multimedia sites here for your convenience. The outdoor grounds include spacious courtyard areas , outdoor basketball courts and playing fields .
Our Math Trail journey is an interdisciplinary project which stressed the connection between Math, Science and the Writing Process which we focused on during the last marking period.  We concentrated on measurement, data gathering and the application of formulas.  Our original Massachusetts MCAS type word problems  directly relate to our new,  school courtyard area and  a recent trip to the New England Aquarium.
We are very proud of the progress our 7th Grade students made this year in math. Great Work!
2006 Project Coordinators:
Ms. Linda Dano- retired LPSD teacher/ Math Trail Designer
Mr. Paul Giguere -  Stoklosa Instructional Technology Teacher
Mrs. Ellen Savage - Stoklosa Lead Math Teacher
Many thanks to the numerous student photographers who  took many of the digital photos included in our project!

Problem 1.
Marleena
How many bags of mulch would you need to cover a 4 foot by 8 foot area  6 inches deep?  How much would it cost?
a.)  4 bags,  $40            c.) 16 bags,  $40

b.)  6 bags,  $50            d.)  10 bags,  $100

Solution 1:     a.)  6 inches = .5 feet   / V= Lx WxH     V= 8x4x.5= 16 cubic feet       16/ 4per bag= 4 bags       4bags times $10= $40

Problem 2.

          Neang
How much cement would you need to replace a large lightpost base in cubic inches? If 231 cubic inches  equals 1 gallon, how             many gallons of premixed cement would you need?

                   a.) 1000 inches, 400 gallons       b.)12334.52 cubic inches, 486.29 gallons

                   c.) 2000 inches, 400 gallons       d.) 5000 cubic inches, 40 gallons

Solution 2 :  b.)  V= pi rx  h      The base of the column is the area of the circle, so 3.14   X  13 squared = 3.14 X 169  = 560.66
560.66X 22 inch height = 12334.52.   If 231 cubic inches  equals 1 gallon, 12334.52 / divided by 231 inches to a gallon = 486.2966 gallons of pre mixed cement.

1. School Community,
2. History and Landmarks
3. Multicultural Connections
4. Famous People
5. Sports, Entertainment and Recreation.
A problem template and guidelines were made available to all students who wished to participate.  Problems submitted here represent our students' best efforts.  For further details, templates, a lesson plan with standards , photos and additional student math problems and solutions , please visit:
