Skiing at Stowe

Sören and I had our first day of skiing yesterday, at Spruce Peak. We got private lessons for about two hours for the two of us, and Sören picked it up perfectly. We kept skiing for a couple of hours more, before both of us were really beat and cold.

I was very surprised, because there really hasn't been much snow here yet this winter, but the snow-making equipment had kept the runs very nice. Vermont also has a bad reputation for ice on the runs, but we didn't encounter much of it yesterday.

We're going back to the mountain today and try our hand at several more beginner slopes. I think the Easy Mile and some variation on the Tollhouse Road are on the books for today. Sören is intent on graduating from beginner slopes to intermediate while on this trip. We'll see!

I hadn't been skiing in years, and one thing that was a shocker for me is that everyone wears helmets now. It shouldn't be a surprise after all the celebrity deaths in the last decade and a half, but it's just one more area where we were so oblivious to safety concerns when I was growing up...
