Cornucopia of Dorset is a lovely B&B we recently tried in Dorset, Vermont.

Review: A sweet, enthusiastic dog greeted us as we entered this pretty clapboard inn. The equally friendly innkeeper showed us our spacious room and offered us refreshments on the porch. She told us about Dorset, including the old marble quarry which is great for swimming. Dorset is close to the Manchester outlets as well. The scrumptious country breakfast was served family style so we got to meet the other guests. We loved the hospitality and attention to detail we found at this inn.

Here’s a B&B that has a nice, relaxed atmosphere, called Harrison House in Harrison, Maine.

Review: We picked this inn because it was near family we were visiting. Harrison is a small town in the lake region of southwestern Maine. Our large, nicely decorated room had a very picturesque view of Long Lake. Our four-poster feather bed was wonderfully comfortable and the breakfasts included were gourmet and delectable! We got all this at a very reasonable rate.

Another inn we love is the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, Maine.

Review: This inn has an elegant yet easy-going atmosphere. Afternoon tea was served with cheese, crackers and sweets in the spacious parlor where a large polar bear “played” the piano! Our room had a fireplace with the logs all in place and ready to light. The meal we had in the formal dining room was scrumptious and having the caesar salad prepared “tableside” made it interesting too. Desserts can be ordered that way also. The inn is right in town for easy outlet shopping!

Our all-time favorite country inn is The Red Lion Inn in the picturesque town of Stockbridge, Mass.

Review: We have been going there only at off times of year since our honeymoon in 1985. What we love is the activity in and around the Inn itself especially in the lobby where there's seating and often a crackling fire going. The food is classic New England fare. Both the Main Dining room and the smaller Tavern have wonderful atmospheres. There are antiques from the Victorian era in all the hallways and the rooms.

Another inn we love winter or summer is the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont. It's actually more of a resort since you can eat all your meals there and stay there for all your activities.

Review: Very friendly service, plenty of hearty Austrian food, great cross country skiing on the trails behind the lodge. There's a tiny log cabin you can ski to that will serve you warm soup for lunch or hot cocoa--wonderful! In the summer the trails are great for hiking.

An excellent Vermont Inn that’s further south is the Old Tavern at Grafton in Grafton,Vermont.

Review: It’s situated in one of the most authentic looking New England villages you can find. There's even a blacksmith shop! The inn itself serves very good food and the rooms are beautifully decorated. They serve a full country breakfast and there’s also the Phipp’s Tavern for drinks and games.

In New Hampshire, our favorite inn is the Franconia Inn at, you guessed it, Franconia. However, it too can be called a resort.

Review: There's plenty to do here at this low-key inn. They have horseback riding and gliders you can book a flight in, but both are pricey. There are tennis courts too, a pool and a swimming hole with frigid mountain water! The rooms are OK but the food is terrific and served in a lovely dining room. Great for kids.
