Apple
I purchased the
drive about 3 weeks ago and found when I went to install it that I
needed a bracket and a new cable. Apparently when you go from a DVD
ROM drive to a Superdrive or Combo drive these are needed. After I
installed the drive I archived about 5 CDs worth of programs and
data that I didn't need on the computer. I also archived some more
files on a DVD-R disk. And finally, I burned a couple of Dual Layer
disks. So far everything works fine. I did try to boot off the
optical drive and I was unable to do so by holding down the "C" key
during the boot sequence. I can boot from the optical drive when I
hold down the option key. Apparently the Optical has to be set as
"Master" on the ATA chain for your computer to boot from the
optical drive. From what I have read this only affects
laptops. Xlr8yourmac.com has a good
explanation and a work around. The work around is modifying the
cable by soldering it on a certain pin. Now I've never been good
with a soldering iron so I'm not even going to attempt this
modification. I can live with boot by holding the option key down.
Except for the mix up about what I needed to order everything went
great.

Personal
Ok, I purchased
a DVD Burner to replace my laptops DVD ROM drive. Now, I have a
coworker that I talked to a dozen times about what DVD media I
should buy for what purpose. I can never remember what he told me
when it comes time to make the purchase of media. So I decided that
there are probably others out there that have the same problem. I'm
starting this page
to
record what I have found out about creating DVDs. I'm thinking
about also adding tips about iDVD.

Web Info
Just around
Christmas time I stumbled upon a Podcast and its associated web
site ScreenCastsOnline. The tutorials
are short and to the point and Don does a very good job of making
the tutorial easy and enjoyable. I'm a power user and while some of
the information he provides I already know, he presents it in a way
that doesn't make me feel like the content is below me. I highly
recommend this Podcast. It is very useable even if you don't have
an iPod.
