Sydney has always been one fo my favorite cites
in the world. Since I arrived here last year I was amazed by its diverse,
modern, clean, and friendly feel. Today I hoped to give myself a tour of my
favorite places from last year. I have to
back up a few months to when I was first thinking about coming to Australia.
Back then the idea of being away from the states for more than 30 days seemed
unbelievable. My aspiration at that time was to spend about a month traveling
around Australia taking pictures. One of the places I looked for information
and input was a web site called photo.net. To make a long story short I met
photographer based two hours out of Sydney who was thinking about starting a
photo and hiking tour company in the Blue Mountains. After a few discussions on
where I should get my film, and where I should travel while in the country, I
suggested that I be his first customer for a photo tour of the blue mountains.
Simon agreed to come down to Sydney the day before the trek and show me the
places where I should buy film and get it developed.
Well I talked to Simon early this morning
and he said that he would come down to Sydney as planned. He did however live
quite a ways a away so it was going to take some time for him to get to me. I
got a knock on the door, the housekeep wanted to move me back to the original
room that I was meant to stay in. That wasn't a problem it was just smaller. I
called the internet company which I booked the room through and shortened my
stay by a day. I decided that due to my 8am flight the day after tomorrow, that
I would want to stay out by the airport anyway. I went down to the lobby and
grabbed breakfast at the cafe. The little restaurant attached to the cafe was
not very representative of the hotel. The cafe was clean, the service, was
good, and it seemed to be a pretty popular place with the locals. Two girls who
from what I could guess where about 19 were having a conversation next to me.
The kept talking about how hot the other one looked the night before, and which
boy was cute, and so on. At one point one of the girls asked about what kinda
guy she though she would marry, the other girl responded that she wasn't going
to worry about that until she was old, like 27.
Thanks!!! After a couple hows Simon showed
up and we set out on the town. Simon was a great guy, who had a very similar
history to me in regards to relationships so we swapped stories on that subject.
He was the kinda guy that really enjoyed what he was doing. At the middle of
next month he was going to hike the mountains of Spain on a photographic trek.
Simon took me to one photo store where I
was able to drop my film off for development. From there we stopped at another
photography store where Simon had to pick up some film. Lunch was next on the
agenda, where Simon and I begin in no rush just chatted for about an hour. We
walk across downtown Sydney to the art museum where is girlfriend picked us up.
Talking to Simon I realized just how much more worldly people in this part of
the world are. Not everyone was as knowledgeable as Simon, but over the course
of my trip I have noticed that people are definitely more aware of the world
around them more than Americans. Simon
dropped me off somewhere in the middle of town where I was in-search of a place
to cash a few travelers checks, and log onto the internet. What I ended up
doing was walking down to the Rocks (an area of Sydney which overlooks the Opera
House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge). From there I found a bar that had wireless
internet access (much to their surprise) and updated the website. I decided I
would ride the subway back to the area I was staying. I seemed to remember that
my hotel was near central station so I headed for that stop. Sure enough I was
right around the corner from it.
(it was too dark for my little camera)
I got back to the hotel where Simon later
caught up with me on the phone and gave me directions on how to get to the Blue
Mountains for our photo-trek the next day. I packed and headed to
bed.
