Melbourne
All I pretty much did was wander the city today.
I woke up late, watched some TV, and than headed out to see what I had not seen.
The only problem was that it rained. People have told me that in Melbourne you
get all four seasons in the day. It is true. At the footy game it went from
hot to cold to rainy all in a matter of a couple hours. Today would be no
exception.

The only problem was that it rained. People have told me that in Melbourne you
get all four seasons in the day. It is true. At the footy game it went from
hot to cold to rainy all in a matter of a couple hours. Today would be no
exception. I have gotten in a very bad habit
on this trip of purposely skipping breakfast. Its cheaper that way. Yes I know
that is a poor excuse to miss the ever stated "Most Important Meal of the Day!"
however, on a day like today I missed it because I was just too darn lazy. By
the time I made it to the streets is was about 10:30 and I guessed that I would
just wait for lunch. Not thrown by missing out on my Chinese feast the night
before I decided to hunt down Chinatown and find a good Chinese lunch.
I walked down Bourke and Little Bourke
Street which pretty much make up Chinatown. The streets were lined up and down
with Chinese restaurants, and I happened to be in town during the Chinatown food
festival, however I really couldn't tell that there was anything exceptional
taking place that particular day.
I walked in circles for a while looking at
different menus in windows, and for some reason I felt as if none of them were
really what I wanted. Something kept moving me along, until I just gave up and
went into what looked like a good restaurant. I really think that the power
above has control over even the smallest things, because when I sat down I
realized that this was not your typical chinese restaurant, it was a Dim Sum
Chinese Restaurant. Dim Sim eating has been one of my favorites ever since I
was a young boy and my father would take me to Victoria British Columbia's
chinatown and we would have Dim Sum. For those folk in Memphis that have never
heard of Dim Sum, just think Texas de Brazil with Chinese food. Every minute or
so, someone comes by with a different dish. Needless to say it didn't take me
long to make up for missing breakfast, and probably that nights dinner too. By
the time I arrived I was so hungry that I took the first thing that came along
which was BBQ pork (Chinese Style not Memphis Style). Then steamed prawn
dumplings, then fried noodles, then steamed prawn dumplings again, and then I
decided had enough. All that, and the bill came to $22 Australian. What a
deal. I waddled out onto the street after my
meal and guessed that I could use a long walk. I walked up Elizabeth street,
and back down to the river. I stopped at the coffee bar to check email, and
then explored a little more. By the time I got back to the hotel I decided that
I should probably change my plane ticket not to return to Melbourne. There
really wasn't a big need and seeing that I had already spent a couple extra day
more than I planned I thought it would just be better to fly to Sydney from
Perth. I went back to the hotel to cancel my flight, and having seen how cheap
a flight on Qantas to Perth was, I cancelled my flight on VirginBlue and used
that money to book a flight from Perth to Sydney and from Sydney roundtrip to
Cairns. After changing my flight I went to an internet cafe to book my Qantas
flight, the only problem was, that rather than booking the flight for tuesday I
mistakenly booked it for Monday night. Which when I though about it wasn't that
bad because that meant I saved money by not worrying about a hotel in Melbourne
for the night. On my way back to the
Duxton I took a night shot of the train station and the entrance to the
hotel.
I ended up having dinner in the hotel
that night. It was nothing to write home about...
literally!!!
(This was my room.)
