More proof that George W. Bush is in trouble
I hate to make generalizations about people,
especially groups of people. That's why a news item from earlier this week
really caught me off-guard.
Valley
Forge National Historical Park is located about an hour west of Philadelphia,
and is the site of where Gen. George Washington and his army took refuge during
the difficult winter of 1777 before driving the British out of Philadelphia.
If you want to hold a peaceful
demonstration at Valley Forge, all you have to do is pony up a relatively modest
fee and let the administrators at the park know when you're planning on
marching. That's probably true for all of the parks in the National Park
Service, but Valley Forge is the closest one to where I live, so I can't speak
for the other parks. I suspect they don't have the right to turn anyone away,
unless there happens to be someone else who already booked the date and there
simply won't be enough room at the park for the demonstration (first amendment
rights and all that...)
Anyway, a white
supremacist group is planning on marching at Valley Forge in a couple of weeks.
This is a group that claims to attempt to follow directly in the footsteps of
their hero, that well-known racist and anti-Semite, George
Washington.
Well, they try to make the
argument that he was a racist and anti-Semite, anyway. The closest I've ever
seen about anything approximating either of those with regard to the father of
our nation, is the fact that he owned
slaves...
At any rate, the purpose of
their march is against the tyranny being handed down by President George W.
Bush, whom they compare with King George III, the British King from under whom
the US declared its
independence.
Please don't think I'm
about to pigeonhole the entire Republican party, but I would think that if there
was any group that would be inclined to vote Republican (rather than Democrat),
it would be the white supremacists. And don't think I'm actively ignoring the
fact that the only current member of congress who has ever been a member of the
Ku Klux Klan is a Democrat (West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd).
I can't really imagine the guys who
are about to march on Valley Forge stumping on the campaign for John Kerry, but
if even groups like this are dissatisfied with the Bush administration (or would
they call it a regime?), that can't be good news for the Bush
campaign.
