the annals of pedagogy: 10.05
What is the appropriate response when, as
you are rushing to the crowded theatre where you are to introduce a visiting
artist to his audience (and you are already a bit
en
retard!), a young red-headed man
shouts out, "Phoebe, I love
you!" Now, understand that this
young man was a student of yours last semester, and a good one. He is surrounded
by a bevy of other young people, whom you recognize as former students as
well.
Hmm. I suppose
any
response is satisfactory. As long as it takes
very little time to
formulate, and can be
delivered
quickly. You must shout your response
en haut
voix,
so that it can be clearly heard above the din
of the crowd, and you must not interrupt your mad dash towards the theatre, as
you are not only late, but also only half prepared to introduce your guest, and
can ill afford to lose time.
