well, you know, maybe I'm angry after all.e-mailed to me (source

Gloeckner on NPR Apparently Phoebe Gloeckner (A CHILD'S LIFE) was on 360 , an NPR magazine style show the other day. Reader 'JF' sent us the link and provided an analysis: I was listening to NPR last
night and on the program Studio 360, I was shocked to hear how mercilessly
Phoebe Gloeckner was treated. Of course, when one of the guests was Michael
Medved, you can be sure there will be some discussion of its “lack of
merits,” but as someone who respects her work as anything but
pornographic, I was troubled by how even the liberal skewing host and other
guest were rather dismissive, going so far as to suggest that publishing comics
in the public arena isn’t an appropriate place to work out one’s
personal issues. ?!?! Anyway, it’s a 10 minute segment towards the end of
this week’s program. There’s also a nice interview with Gloeckner
herself.
Anger comes to me slowly, you
see.
I challenge Michael Medved, Kurt Anderson, Rochelle Gurstein, individually or as a group, to a live discussion about my work, about what is "acceptable" material for libraries, and beyond that, what is valid fodder for "art," and indeed, what they feel the role of art and the artist is in our society. You may not be surprised that I strongly disagree with much of what was said on Kurt Anderson's program, and I could easily argue that the manipulative editing of my interview resulted in a misrepresentation of my views to fit the "spin" the show's editors wanted to put on that week's broadcast.
"Hello Rochelle, Mike, and Kurt. Please join me in my stately bathroom at the hotel in Detroit where I'm relaxing after a long day at a faculty retreat. Let's have a glass of water and talk about obscenity. You've got an open invitation." Posted: Friday - September 16, 2005 at 11:31 PM |
