Aberedw Castle

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; castle in Elvayl Huchmenyt

In the community of Aberedw. In the historic county of Radnorshire (Modern authority of Powys, preserved county of Powys).

A Quadrillateral castle, c.36m by 34m, with circular towers, 4.0-6.0m in diameter at each angle, those to the W destroyed by railway construction. A moat, 10-20m wide surrounds the site, with a causewayed entrance on the E and a counterscarp on the N. Pettifer writes subject of licence to crenellate in 1285. In fact more a grant for Walter Hackelutel to hold the castle he had already begun needed because of changes of ownership.

A supposed Royal licence to crenellate was granted in 1284 Nov 24.

This site is a scheduled monument protected by law.
