Rhuddlan Town Defences

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Cledemutha

In the community of Rhuddlan. In the historic county of Flintshire (Modern authority of Denbighshire, preserved county of Clwyd).

Good remains of two sets of Angular earthworks built to defend the Norman and then the Edwardian Town. A defensive circuit consisting of two lines of bank with a medial ditch, remains consist of a ditch, up to 20m wide and 2.5m deep, runs NNW-SSE for c.570m, before turning to run SW for c.300m as a bank, 24m wide and 1.0m high, to terminate above the Clwyd. Of those defences previously thought to be the remains of C10 burgh defences, a more recent interpretation compares this work with the known Edwardian late C13 earthwork circuits at Rhuddlan and Flint. It is suggested that the remains are of a circuit constructed in the course of Edward I's initial campaign of conquest in 1277.
