In 1431/2, Sir William Eure (William Ewer) was granted, by Cardinal Langley, Bishop of Durham, (In year 26 of his reign) a Durham licence to crenellate Bradley (Bradley Hall, Wolsingham)

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Sir William Eure of Witton Castle (b 1396, d 20.08.1465). m. Maud FitzHugh (dau of Henry FitzHugh, 4th Lord). Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1445.
Bishop Langley, royal diplomat and councillor, but spent considerable time in the north and undertook reorganization of the palatinate powers of the bishops of Durham. In 1433 William was discontent with Langley's administration. William's father Ralph was pardoned, by Bishop Langley, for crenellation Witton Castle in 1410.
