In 1394 Sept 1, Hugh Cheyne, chivaler (Hugh Cheney) was granted, by Richard II, (In year 18 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Longefeld (Cheney Longville Castle)

"Licence for Hugh Cheyne, knight, to crenellate his manor (manerium) of Longefeld. "

Granted at Hereford, by privy seal.

Identified by Parker as Longfield, near Dartford, Kent.

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Hugh Cheney (d, 1404)

Hugh Cheney (d, 1404) May have been a squire of Edward III's household. 'Hugh Cheyne married Joan, daughter and heir of John de Wodeford. [Footnote: Abb. Rot. Orig. II; 264.]' (Hulbert) and probable later royal service as knight and as keeper of Shrewsbury Castle (1365-99), Wigmore (1402-d.) and Ludlow castle and town (c. 1403-d.). MP for Shropshire 1378, 1379, 1388, 1391, 1401 and Worcestershire 1388, 1390. JP Shrop 1390-97, Worcs 1403-d.
