In 1195, William de Botterell (Botreaux) was supposedly granted, by Richard I, a Royal licence to crenellate (Matefelun)

Although this document has been considered by some as a licence to crenellate it is not actually such licence.

In 1195 William de Botterell was granted permission to fortify a house at Matefelun, and received ten marks to help pay for the work. Not, in a meaningful sense, a licence to crenellate although has been called this by some.

Significant later source are;

The Botterell's held land in Shropshire and Cornwall and seem to be of the knightly class, but I can't find biographical details of this specific William.

More details about licences to crenellate can be found here.
