Shuckburgh Castle, Dullingham

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Fir Bush

In the civil parish of Dullingham. In the historic county of Cambridgeshire (Modern Authority of Cambridgeshire, 1974 county of Cambridgeshire).

This site has been described as a;
Uncertain.
  Confidence: It is doubtful that this site was a medieval fortification or palace.   Nothing visible remains.
Cambridgeshire HER record of site of medieval castle. No other details but seems to reference 1836 OS map. 1890 OS map shows as site of Shuckburgh Castle and also of gravel pits so it is doubtful if anything remains and even aerial photos or geophysical survey will not be able to reveal meaningful evidence. Site now copse. Site now fairly isolated and not the recorded site of a DMV. As far as I am to ascertain the Shuckburgh family came from Warwickshire and, although marriages moved various branches about the country, do not seem to have had medieval holdings in Cambridgeshire. The VCH parish history for Dullingham has no relevant information and the name Shuckburgh does not occur in in an volume of the VCH for Cambs except as a C20 authors name. I suspect this was a post-medieval house but this needs further investigation and I would welcome further information and suggestions.
