Beckley Palace

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Dovers Field

In the civil parish of Beckley And Stowood. In the historic county of Oxfordshire (Modern Authority of Oxfordshire, 1974 county of Oxfordshire).

This site has been described as a;
Palace.
  Confidence: It is probable that this site was a medieval fortification or palace.   Nothing visible remains.
Site of former manor house, royal residence and dower house, and hunting lodge at Beckley, extant from C13-C16.
"Palace" of Richard of Cornwall - building begun 1227; house destroyed 1233. Traces of foundations and a moat observed near Dovers Field. Capital messuage of honor of St Valery and "palace" of Richard of Cornwall - building begun 1227; house destroyed 1233 by Richard Siward as a reprisal for his desertion of the marshal. Traces of foundations and a moat observed near Dovers Field by White Kennett. Not classifiable as magnate's residence or as any type of castle for MPP; moat has been scored for MPP. Evaluation during early stages of construction of private dwelling at NGR SP 5633 1124. Features interpreted as pits suggest nearby domestic activity, which could range from Saxo-Norman to C15th, clearly before and after the 1227 - 1233 "Beckley Palace" occupation. (Oxfordshire HER)
