Mere Castle

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Hough Hall; Strethul

In the civil parish of Mere. In the historic county of Cheshire (Modern Authority of Cheshire, 1974 county of Cheshire).

This site has been described as a;
Uncertain.
  Confidence: It is doubtful that this site was a medieval fortification or palace.   Earthworks remains.
Leland records 'The ditches and the plot where the castle of Mere stood' The only existing feature in the parish of Mere is Hough Hall recorded in PastScape as 'A moat with a platform roughly 30m square and a ditch 12-14m on three sides, now dry, but water-filled until 1938. A very wide ditch and arm 19-24m wide on the North-West side appears to be a fishpond. Ridge and furrow runs from the South-East to the North-West over the entire moat.'
My association of this site with Leland's report has not been taken up by other authors and is weak. The general location and the site itself are that of a homestead moat of moderate social status. Leland may have been referring to another, now lost, site or this site had been given a grandiose 'history'.

This site is a scheduled monument protected by law.

It is an offence to disturb a Scheduled Monument without consent. It is a destruction of everyone's heritage to remove archaeological evidence from any site without proper recording and reporting. Don't use metal detectors on historic sites without authorisation.
