Castle Carrock Hallsteads

In the civil parish of Castle Carrock. In the historic county of Cumberland (Modern Authority of Cumbria, 1974 county of Cumbria).

Suggested Alternative site of Castle Carrock Castle. Marked 'Hallsteads Supposed Remains of' on 1868 OS Map. Jackson writes earthworks are entirely natural. PastScape records as 'Large flat topped mound averaging 3m high. Originally sub-rectangular in shape it has been levelled to the south by waterworks, construction of which in 1904 apparantly showed the earthwork to be 'natural'. However, a squared log and large charred pointed stake found at the site have been used to suggest a palisade or stockade. Scheduled as a 'camp'.'
