Shareshill Moat

In the civil parish of Shareshill. In the historic county of Staffordshire (Modern Authority of Staffordshire, 1974 county of Staffordshire).

Site of moated mansion dating back to C12 to about 1400. Probable manor house. Although this seems a fairly straight forward square moat something about it made Lynam record it as a defensive enclosure and he wrote "from its form and situation, has something of the appearance of a Roman origin."
Site of medieval moat probably excavated in the 1930s (or 1950s) prior to redevelopment. The moat originally constructed in the twelfth century, and then altered and strengthened in the thirteenth century. It appears to have been destroyed by fire in the mid 14th century. (Staffs HER)
