Great Ilford Lavender Mount

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Uphall Camp

In the civil parish of Redbridge. In the historic county of Essex (Modern Authority of London Borough of Redbridge, 1974 county of Greater London).

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle
Urban Defence
.
  Confidence: It is probable that this site was a medieval fortification or palace.   Cropmarks/slight earthworks remains.
Small mount, perhaps remains of motte. Salter suggests adjoining enclosure is a village defence. PastScape record reads "Site of an Iron Age hillfort, Roman settlement and C16 beacon mound, now covered by modern buildings. Excavation uncovered evidence for late Bronze Age or early Iron Age occupation, the palisaded entrance of the hillfort and Roman huts." The 1875 Os map calls the surrounding site 'Camp Remains and site of', this site has, to my eyes, the classic playing card shape of the Roman fort, but finds apparently dated from 1st and 2nd centuries BC. Lavender Hill was a mound in one corner of this camp, although this contained no finds dating before C16. This site overlooks the river, not currently a crossing point but was one in 1875 and possibly before. Drawing conclusions from an absence of medieval finds in a highly damaged site should be treated with caution.
