In the civil parish of Withern With Stain. In the historic county of Lincolnshire (Modern Authority of Lincolnshire, 1974 county of Lincolnshire).

Trapezoidal Mediaeval moat, altered in the Post-Mediaeval, possibly during the Civil War, with evidence of turrets in the angles. The island tapers from 80m to 60m and is 75m wide. The steep-sided moat is between 12m and 18m wide, up to 2.0m deep, and dry. The level interior is surrounded on all but the North-West side by a rampart, between 8m and 10m wide and up tp 1.5m high. At each corner the rampart splays outwards forming platforms which may have provided gun emplacements. This does appear to be the manorial centre.
The later alterations make judgment of medieval fortification difficult but a possible castle although the close proximity of the certain motte at Toothill (TF 419810) does, possibly, make the identification of this as a castle less likely.
