Berkhamsted Castle
Also known as, or recorded in historical
documents as; Berkhampstead; Berkhamstead; Great Berkhamsted
In the civil parish of Berkhamsted.
In the historic county of Hertfordshire (Modern Authority of Hertfordshire, 1974 county of Hertfordshire).
Earthwork remains of a Medieval motte and bailey castle, dating from the late C11 AD. The surviving masonry buildings and curtain walls probably date from the late C12, the circular keep may be dated to c.1254. The entire castle is surrounded by double moat.
This site is a scheduled
monument protected by law.
