Somewhat dated now, but unreplaced regarding Gascon towns, at least in English and seminal text on the subject. Does make mention of town defences but as an economic historian perhaps Beresford is best at town markets. Importantly Beresford was a historian who took great care to look at remains and to try to understand the bias in historical accounts. There is something delightful about Beresford's chatty writing style.
