English Castles
Reginald Allen Brown
The classic textbook on castles in England and Wales, it also deals with the continental origins of the castle. Somewhat old now, but a nice general introduction to English Medieval castles with some good plans.
Whilst this is a fine text book it is dated and limited in its outlook and premise. Much important scholarship has been done since this book was published over half a century ago. It is a starting point for castle studies not the final word.
