KUILAU RIDGE TRAIL

We drive inland to take this trail.  The day is unusually clear up on Mt.

Wai'ale'ale, and we can actually see into the crater.  This is the first

time that we have seen it.  Helicopters fly in, looking like tiny white dots.

The vegetation around us is unusual and plentiful.

From the high point we can look east and see to the coast,

and to the town ofKapa'a.

The end of the trail is well-marked.

Coming down we have incredible views of hills and valleys and a small

river below.  We hear a very strange birdcall in this area,

and glimpse a small brown bird.

When we are done hiking, Phil rinses his shoes in the road.
