BIRDS OF THE POIPU AREA

It is believed that the Pacific Golden-Plover led the early Polynesians

to the Hawaiian Islands.  In April these migratory birds will

head for the Arctic.

The Common Myna is found all over the island, and is comical with

his preference for hopping.  He is an import from India.

The Zebra Dove was imported from Malaysia.

Less common is the larger Spotted Dove.

This Red-Crested Cardinal was standing on the grounds of the

Beach House Restaurant.  He is an import from South America.

This is a White-rumped Shama, photographed from behind.  Not visible is

his  red-orange breast.  He is a thrush with the most beautiful of songs.

The Hawaiian Gallinule is an endangered species.

Another endangered species is the Hawaiian Stilt.
