Monks and Wats

I like the photo of these two monks gazing out on the Mekong in Vientiane. Ready to give alms to the monks in Luang Prabang in front of the Phusi Hotel.  This photo was taken inside Wat Chanthabuli, which is located a little south of Wat Ong Teu. This large bronze seated Buddha is from the original temple that stood on this site.

This shot is of the Haw Pha Ban in Luang Prabang, what the Lonely Planet calls a "religious pavilion" where the Pha Bang will be housed. It is apart of the Royal Palace Museum. I forget the name of this Wat in Vientiane, but love the murals that tell Buddha's life story. This was taken at Wat Luang Ban Xieng Jai. The red and silver-lacquered pillars are a Thai Lu temple design characteristic.

There monks were cleaning up this wat in preparation for National Day.  I took this shot at Wat Long Khun across the Mekong from Luang Prabang.  In Vientiane there is a levee you can walk along and gaze out on the Mekong river and Thailand across the way. Along the levee there are many little restaurant stalls and it's a great place to 'hang,' and for me, to take photos. This photo was taken at sunset and I like the blur of the monks.

This series was taken in Luang Prabang. The monks begin collecting alms shortly after 6:00 a.m. and since the sun still hasn't come up, available light photos require a slow shutter speed. I've taken a lot of photos with the flash, but there is an ethereal quality I like with the blurring of the monks.

I was photographing the sunset along the levee in Vientiane when I saw these monks working in the gardens along the Mekong Bank. I followed a trail down and as I took some photos this monk came up to talk. You can see his robe is wet in spots because he just finished swimming from the island you can see in the background. You don't have to be Lao to give alms. I'm pretty sure these ladies are Japanese and they were excited to be in Laos. Monk studying Buddhist scripture at Wat Long Khun across from Luang Prabang.
