The Herndon Express is an "over 30" team playing in the Northern Virginia "Coaches League".  Our home field is Hutchinson Elementary. We play our games Saturday afternoons. We have a sister team with the same name and uniform that plays in the "open" division. We are also playing in the new Dulles Sportsplex www.dullessportsplex.com in the Tuesday night over-35 league.

Well, at least it was a beautiful day.  We had the ball in their half for 95% of the first half, but they scored on a breakaway.  In the second half, we faded and they scored all sorts of goals.

4/17          Marshall HS Falls Church Turtles

They didn't have enough players

4/24         Haley Smith Springfield '74

Tied 2-2

Another beautiful day.  Considering we didn't have Adam, we held up OK.  They scored first (on Mike F), but Glenn evened it out.  We were down 2-1 at the half.  Jason evened it up, but we never were able to go ahead.

Won 3-2

Despite having a hard time getting enough players, we played on a beautiful field on a beautiful day.  With the late addition of Paul and Jon's daughter, Danielle, we had a great game.  Tony, Jon, and Shane had our goals.  Mike F. filled in as keeper.  It's hard to tell if Mike's knee or Shane's ankle is more swollen.

(our sister team) This hasn't happened before!

Lost 0-3

We didn't get beaten as bad as the score would have you believe.  We held them to a tie until the last 10 minutes.  The combination of youth, speed, and substitutes gave them the advantage.

5/15

Paul Henken

Sterling Great Pretenders

Won 3-2

We only had 10 and it was hot, but that didn't stop Jason from getting 2 in the first 5 minutes.  They eventually caught up, but we remained strong in the second half and Thabit scored our third.

5/22 Haley Smith Sterling (leesburg) Sting

Lost 0-2

This week we had 11 and a couple of subs and it was hot, but no Jason.  They had lots of young subs and played well.  They got two really nice goals.  One of their players was red carded for taking out Shane in the first half, but that didn't seem to help us.

5/29 Idylwood Alianza

6/12 Haley Smith Orangemen

Won 6-1

We had plenty of players and the game was lots of fun.  We started early with Shane giving Pete a perfect cross for the first goal.  I think Tony got the next. Another unusual one was a Greg to Joel combo.  Pete and Mike J. joined the Orangemen since they didn't have any subs.  Thabit picked up a couple at close range.  Glenn sent a beautiful cross that Steve headed in despite being covered by Pete.

6/19 Idylwood Vienna Adult

Lost 4-5

We started out strong with Shane in the goal (with Greg and Glenn looking for the field). I think Jason had the first and Jeff (Tony's friend) had the second.  In the second half, Vienna came alive and their underage strikers quickly knocked in 3.  Shane had an impossible goal and then Jason was taken down in the penalty area and made the Pk.  They ended up getting another to win the game.

6/26 Haley Smith Chantilly Casuals

Tie 1-1

They were short, so we gave them Shane as keeper and a couple of field players.  Shane was great at reading our crosses. Tony finally put one past him. We got very good at finding the post, but couldn't find the net.  The ref made a screwy call after giving Greg a yellow card.  He put the ball on the Penalty spot for an indirect kick.  Fortunately, they didn't score. You can see a more detailed discussion in the yahooo group. http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/HerndonExpress/members

7/10 Herndon Comm Ctr Herndon Attack

Lost 0- 1

I was in on a cruise, but I heard we lost.

7/17 Poe Int ACSC

Won 1-0

Poe Int is a horrible field, and when we got there it was closed.  After a half hour of dicking around, they found another field.  Over the years I have said, "this was the worst field ever" many times.  We reached a new low.  This church field was the worst I have ever played on.  Tony managed to slip one in before the rain started.  Then the rain came and some serious lightning.  We stopped the game and after a few minutes, gave up.

7/24 Haley Smith Fairfax Sting (new team)

Lost 2-5

We started with only 9 players and I think they were up 2-0 by the time we had 11.  We should have scored a whole lot more and they shouldn't have scored so many.  They had a big guy who ended up 1 on 1 with Greg 3 times from what must have been an offsides position on at least 2 of them.  Glenn sent one to Amir for a nice finish.  Tony had our second.

7/31

Northern VA Arsenal

/Herndon Attack

Lost 1-4

We started with only 9 players and I think...hey this is just like last week.  Actually Northern VA Arsenal cancelled, so we ended up playing the Attack at 10am. They gave us a couple of McNish's, but we just didn't have game.  Shane played goalie for us and I think Amir had the goal.

8/7 Haley Smith Mt Vernon

Won 8-2

I knew this was going to be an unusual game, because we almost had a full team 10 minutes before kickoff.  Joe started us off with his first goal and we didn't look back. Jason had 2, and Glenn, Tony added their own.  What was unusual was Dale went to forward and scored two within 10 minutes.  Not to be outdone, Joel sent a nice cross which ended up going in.

8/14 Haley Smith Falls Church Turtles

Cancelled/Rain

8/21 Newington Heights Springfield '74

Lost 4-3

We were up 3-1 but couldn' withstand the 2nd half bad calls and lucky goals.
Thabit had 2- One of them a header off of a Shane cross. Shane headed in a shot from Glenn for the 3rd.

8/28 Gunston MS Arlington

Won 7-4

This should have been a home game, but all fields in our area were taken by the Dulles tournament.  We had a fun time on the artificial surface.   Arlington scored a record 3 own goals to make it interesting.  Thabit had 1, Damien 2, Glenn 1 and they had the rest.

A hot day with just enough rain to make it interesting.  The best condition the Herndon community center has seen in quite some time.  We played amazingly well with the ãAttackä playing lots of defense.  I think Shane got our first.  The second was a Thabit PK.  Our third came right after they tied it up, with Glenn finishing a loose ball in front of the goal.  Glenn also got a yellow for tangling with their guest player who looked like Jamie.

Virginia United wasnât.  We scored quickly into the game and they fell apart.  Jason had the first, and Thabit the next two (with an assist on one of them from Shane).  Greg didnât touch the ball much, but did have a nice save in the second half.  For some unknown reason, we didnât score in the second half.  The other team took out a lot of their frustration on Pete.

äNicest Field in a whileä despite Hurricane Isabel coming through a few days before.  We were in control most of the first half with lots of chances.  After limping off the field, Thabit came back and scored.  Steve had another to give us a 2-0 lead in the first half.  They got some new blood in the second half, and before long it was 2-2.  Amir gave us the winner.

9/27

Sterling Sting

Won 2-0
Hutchinson was in pretty bad shape, but that worked to our advantage against a younger and more skilled team. For our first goal, Jon took the ball to the corner and tied up the defense.  Pete snuck in and stole the ball and crossed it to Thabit for the goal.  In the second half, Shane crossed it to Damien for our insurance.  Amir was very solid in goal.

Won 4-3
We were short players, again, but managed to win. Guest commentary from Greg:  With only seven players available and Shane there to watch and supply the beer because of a leg injury, drastic measures were needed.  Shane decided to play keeper and Greg played defense.  Playing three men down the first half, Thabit scored two goals as he converted one on one breakaways Vs their keeper. We had a half time lead and picked up a new player, a friend of David and Don the "67 year old" from the other team.  We were 'only' down one man the second half.  Dave took a corner kick and Steve headed in the third goal.  With the score tied 3-3, David had a one on one and made it count scoring the winning goal.  Shane did a great job in goal booting the ball on several occasions as well as impressive punting.  It was a good win considering playing short people.

One of the worst performances I can remember.  Sure the field was small and the sun was in our eyes a couple of times, but still.  They scored 3 in the first half, and then a quick one in the second.  Steve got one soon after and I thought that was the start of a major rally.

We wiped off the stink from last week and played very solid.  It was a 0-0 tie at half.  They brought in a young ringer who scored.  Thabit got mauled in the box, but the ref called it outside.  Glenn took a high kick through the fingertips of their short goalie.  Their ringer got a another goal and then Damien tied it up for us.

Once we got the cars and the kids off the field, we had a fine game.  Chantilly was short, so we gave them a few players including Tony who played keeper for them the whole game.Ê We had the ball in their half most of the time, but we couldnât get anything past Tony (most of them went way past Tony into the woods).Ê Finally, Jason drove one in.Ê Steve crossed one to Tom (guest player) who finished it.

Instant Winter once the sun got low with the field in wet, but pretty good condition.  They scored early although we had most of the possessions.  Steve had a great cross and Damien used his entire body to finish. Jeff snuck in behind Pete and headed a perfect ball from Alvin to give the Attack the lead..  A few minutes later Glenn put one in high above the keeper.  A great effort and most importantly, plenty of beer afterward.

They were short, so we gave them at least 4 players.  Once they got their whole team, they started to fall apart.  Amir got the first through the keepers legs. (Dave's son was their keeper for the first 10 minutes and wasn't scored upon)  Steve had a couple, Jason one (after 3 or 4 to get his bearing.  I won't even mention Thabit (oops). Steve had 2/3 of a hat trick.  Even Serge scored for us (this time).  Late in the game Adam and Joel demonstrated that they can be just as effective as our forwards.

They pretty much out played us the whole game.  Joel was the keeper in the first half and Shane and Thabit split the second. Steve got our only goal.  Ref was good at enforcing throw-ins and cursing.  Shane got a red card, but he talked his way out of it for the second half.

Guest commentary by Greg. "From the left wing, Shane slants towards the goal and hits a shot off the keepers left hand and into the net for the 1-0 score at half time.  From the right side, Glenn puts a perfect corner kick ball over to "visiting" Hector's feet, who is just to the left of the goal center and kicks the 2nd goal in cleanly.  From a throw in from the right side, John's toss ends up crossing over to Peter who is running to his right and puts a nice ball to the left of the keeper, 3-0.  And now for the 'classiest' goal of the game.  "Visiting" Jason puts a long pass to Thabit, who runs it deep into the left corner.  He turns and crosses a ball to Steve.  Steve lifts a leg up to stop and control the ball.  The ball stays airborne in front of Steve who then kicks the ball out of the air for the 4th goal.  Steve will do this again for those of you who missed the game next week.  4-0 win.  PS: The team finally wins a game without Joel."  Pete's note: Hector is shown in the team picture between Glenn and me.  Since he's been gone 3 years, it's time for a new team picture. This marks the first game where we've had a team management hat trick.

It rained hard before the game, but we still had another hot day.  We gave Arlington several players, and we dominated most of the game.  Tony, Damien, Jason, Steve (2), and Brian had our goals.  Paul's friend from Girlscouts, Tony, did a great job as our substitute goalie.

It was the first "coldish" day of the season (about 50 degrees) and a strong wind.  The ref started the game right on time, even though we only had 7 players, and Sterling had 9.  We started against the wind.  We had a few stragglers, and so did they, and after awhile we scored first -- although they loudly protested that we were offside. 1-0.  Then we scored again, and they again complained about offside, but not as loudly.  2-0.  And yet again we scored against the wind, and this time they did not complain.  3-0.  We were a bit surprised, because they were a very good team, and we still are a bit weak on offense.  However, "old" Marco was back.  Also, Digger from the under-30 team (he was on the team before it split in two) seems to have joined our team. Before the half, they had a guy who was offside (I saw him very clearly), and he scored -- I guess the ref was trying to even things up.  3-1.
Jamie played goalie the first half, but Greg showed up at halftime.  Our defense was Adam, me, and Rich -- and Shane and Dale shared the fourth spot, because no other defenders showed up.  By the second half, we had 13 players and they had 11-12.   After awhile Adam was called for a handball in the penalty area (it might have inadvertently hit his bicep and ribcage at the same time), and they converted the penalty kick.   3-2.
They seemed to tire a bit, and we had the wind at our backs.  So soon we scored again.  4-2.  And again. 5-2.  And that's how the game ended.  We actually played quite well under the circumstances.

Tie 3-3
Guest report from Joel: This week we played the team from Springfield with the blue shirts.  We usually do well against them, but this time they used a number of Hispanic players who were just standing around, and even a player from our under-30's team (our home games are now at 5:00, because the other team plays their home games at 3:00). The beginning of the game began just as a thunderstorm moved overhead, bringing some rain.   It lasted about 15 minutes, and we kept playing.  After about 5 minutes, they scored on a corner kick. 1-0.  Before the half, we scored on some nice pass work, to end the half at 1-1.  Our forwards this time were Shane, Tony, Steve, and a guy named Alan, who might have played with Rene's team in the past.  We had no subs, or maybe one.
In the second half, they scored again off a corner kick.   1-2.  Then they scored again off a corner kick (!), 1-3.  On this one, one of their players was completely unmarked.  He headed the ball toward the goal.   Greg got his fingertips on it, but it hit the back of my legs to go in.  Then we scored with some nice passing again.  2-3.  With about 10 minutes left, Paul took a free kick from the right side, just a bit past the midfield line on their side of the field.  It went straight into the upper left-hand corner.  3-3. After they had a shot hit the post, and we had one hit the post, the game ended. 3-3.   We REALLY need to work on our corner-kick defense!!!

The Herndon Express is a men's soccer team that plays in the Northern Virginia Coach's League (NVCL).  The league is composed of teams from Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun Counties and plays games every Saturday afternoon throughout the year.

Herndon Express was formed in 1979.  Several dozen men and women had been playing in a pick-up league on Sunday mornings at Herndon's Hutchinson Elementary School with Haley Smith, the father of Herndon Youth Soccer (HYS).  (Haley wore steel-toed soccer boots, and it did hurt if he kicked you.)  A number of the men yearned to play a more hard-core brand of soccer, so two menâs teams were formed to play in the NVCL (many of the men were coaches in HYS).  Ron Rose and another guy chose the teams.  The other guy chose the people he thought were the best players; Ron chose the people he thought would best come together as a team.  HYS outfitted both teams with the standard HYS shirts -- red for Ron's team and green for the other team.  The red team became known as Herndon Express and lost every game in the first year.  The green team won more games, but they were a collection of prima donnas that folded after just a few years.  Herndon Express persevered, added a few key players that Ron thought would fit the team chemistry, practiced, and started winning most of their games.  Frequently, the team would meet at a Herndon tavern after the game and down a few beers for medicinal purposes.  The list of taverns started with Ziggy's and through the years included the Event, Foot Anakins, Scoreboard, Champions, Hard Times Cafe, and Jimmy's Old Town Tavern.

In 1987, two of the original team members, Bob Hixon and Rich Emch, became the team's coach and assistant coach, respectively.  Bob continued to follow Ron's guiding principles and maintained good team chemistry.  The team maintained its affiliation with HYS and often did field maintenance and reseeding at HYS's field at Herndon Elementary School.  One of the team's highlights was winning the St. Patrick's Day Tournament in Herndon in 1990: The team's photo even appeared on the front page of the Herndon Observer

By the mid-1990s, many of the team members were into their late 30s and 40s, and it was getting harder to compete with the teams in the Open Age Division.  The club therefore split into two teams -- an over-30 Division team and an Open Age Division team.  Both teams were still known as the Herndon Express and players often played for either team if needed.  Bob and Rich continued to manage the over-30 team.  Again, the early years in the over-30 league brought mostly losses until a few key "speedier"players were recruited.

In the late 1990s, Bob and Rich turned the team management over to Pete Muller and Steve Barbour.  In 2002, Bob and Rich, the last two remaining original team members, retired after 23 years with the same team. (The old joke is that soccer players never retire, they just score less often.)

Both Herndon Express teams still play in the NVCL today, which makes the Express one of the longest continually running soccer teams in the state.
